With the evolution of smart grid, some of the electrical demands which were previously considered fixed, are becoming flexible and can be used as distributed energy resource.Demand side management plays a crucial role in smart grid.Demand side management is a way to measure the improvement in the energy system at consumer’s end. It encourages the users to shift the electricity consumption in reference with varying electricity prices buy which they can be incentivized by the utility. Demand response is one of the method to apply DSM.Demand response is a concept related to change in power consumption of electric customer’s demand in terms of electric utility condition.Demand response in electric power system is very important for both utilities and customers to match the demand of power at peak time of the system. The objective of this thesis is to develop an automated demand side management technique for residential, commercial and industrial customers, which can manage the operation of non-critical power intensive appliances based on pre-defined comfort level and preferences with integrated DG’s. Simulation has been done for a modified IEEE33 bus system.DR has been applied to reduce the peak as well as high load demand of the system. Fixed three steps DR and variable two and three step DR are applied in the system and all cases are compared. The results obtained from simulation are supposed to give a perception of the possible level of load curtailment for residential, commercial and industrial customers, which will reflect the potential of DR in electricity market.en_US
