The level of prosperity, security and welfare of countrymen is determined by an asset called education. National ambitions, technology, urbanization have led us as a society where higher education enjoys a special place. The leaders of our country realised it on an early note that education is essential to achieve the national objectives of increased productivity, political and social integration, cultivation of moral as well as spiritual values, accelerated modernization, and raised living standard for all etc. According to the Ministry of Education of the Govt of India, after independence, a growing awakening and awareness for education was witnessed among the masses who were suppressed for centuries. People started thinking about equality, higher living standards, improved civic amenities and education. This led to the establishment of University Grants Commission (UGC) in the year 1953. Later, by the act of Parliament in the year 1956, it got the status of a statutory organization of the Government of India. It was established to determine, coordinate and maintain the standards of university education.en_US
