Abstract: The need of this study arose from the question of the residual strength after the failure occurs say after an earthquake. For the design of many engineering structures in or on rock, such as foundations, tunnels, underground caverns and drifts, the residual strength of rock is required. To facilitate the cost effective design of such structures a better understanding of post peak behavior of rock is required. This report proposes a constitutive model to predict residual shear strength along the freshly generated discontinuity in quartzite specimen tested under triaxial conditions. Parameters used in this study are JRC value of the discontinuity, inclination of the discontinuity generated and the JCS value which is equal to the UCS value for the fresh discontinuity. This report also provides extensive details on calculation of JRC of joint surfaces obtained during triaxial tests.
