The pulp and paper industry is one of the prime sources of pollution, which discharge considerable amount of pollutants into the environment. It is known that pulp and paper industry has rank third after metal and chemical industry in water intensive process. The pulp and paper industry require huge amount of water; based on water consumption, it has third rank after metal and chemical industries [1].The water consumption and discharge scenario of Indian paper industries is very far from international standard. Indian industries using 30-120 m3 fresh water per ton of paper production and generating considerable amount of effluent [2][3]. Effectiveness of paper making may change the characteristics of the effluent generated. Highly toxic and colored effluent discharged into environment cause serious problem like, disturbance of aquatic life, water born diseases and bioaccumulation [4]. Depletion of groundwater level, reduction in rain fall and huge demand of water by various water intensive industries, also CPCB pressurize to rethink the management of bleach plant effluent to save the environment [1]. Characteristics of the wastewater generated depend upon kappa number, target brightness, viscosity and other properties. It is very important to have the knowledge of the characteristics of the effluent for the selection of treatment process which can make it suitable for reuse in the same industry so the characteristics and quantity of wastewater discharge by paper industry should be according to the CPCB discharge standarden_US
