dc.description.abstractA number of anti-inflammatory and a few anticancer drugs are available in the market for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and cancer, which are serious health problems of human beings. Prolonged use of anti-inflammatory drugs can cause adverse gastrointestinal effects and heart failure, hence there is a need to develop safer anti-inflammatory drugs. In order to have sufficient number of anticancer drugs available in the market there is urgent need to search potent anticancer compounds which may be developed as anticancer drugs. We have made some efforts in this direction, which are described in this thesis. For the sake of clarity, the work embodied in the thesis has been divided into five chapters. First Chapter: General introduction : Heterocyclic compounds as inflammation inhibitors and as anticancer agents : In this chapter, recent work reported in literature on the synthesis, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activity evaluation of thiazole & thiazoline, amidine & amide; acridine & thiourea; pyrimidine & condensed pyrimidine; imidazole & guanidine derivatives have been summarised. Various compounds synthesized and reported in the following chapters were charaterized by IR, 'HNMR, Mass (GCMS, FAB-MS) spectra and elemantal analysis. Second Chapter : In this Chapter synthesis of amidine (Ila-i) and amide (llla-h) derivatives by the following reaction scheme 2.1 & 2.2 is described..........................en_US
