dc.description.abstractSince the discovery of the optical isomerism of tartaric acid, by Louis Pasteur in 1848 the significance of stereoisomerism in relation to biological activity has been well recognized. The physiological environment in living organism is inherently chiral and therefore, the absorption, transport, action, degradation and elimination of the molecules are different for different enantiomers. Thus the development of chromatographic methods, especially those involving liquid chromatography, for enantioseparation has been an intensive area of research. As in the investigation of differences in biological effects, such as pharmacological and toxicological properties, the chiral separation is equally important in chiral synthesis also to know the enantiomeric composition of synthesized chiral compound.
