Abstract: India has a big network of transmission lines. These are divided in 5 grids Northern, Eastern, Western, North-Eastern and Southern Grid. Transmission is done under 765kV, 400kV and 220kV mostly. In this report we are simulating India's largest Northern Grid. It covers 9 states Delhi. Haryana, Ilimaclial Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh Uttarakhand. Indian grid recently got a black out due to failure of northern and eastern grid on 30 and 31 July 2012. Reasons of black out was due to overload at buses. A simulation is required before installing a single another transmission line or voltage regulators, transformers, reactors or any other equipment in the grid or change in the load to avoid money wastage and great hazards like black out or other failures. There is real time simulation is required for closed loop testing of any physical network like grids. It allows a user - to investigate and early detect all disturbances on power system equipment and networks to prevent outages or complete failure. For this purpose we are using RTDS (real time digital simulator) with user interface software RSCAD to simulate Northern Grid. As a part of the results we are analyzing different cases based upon the load increment, L-G, LL-G, LLL-G faults at the different locations and also we are trying to simulate at minimum time step for more real time simulation. In this we are modeling three phase system consisting of 246 (220kV and 400kV )Buses, 60 Generators, 34 'l'ransformers , 30 Reactors, 204 PQ buses, 41 PV buses and 374 Transmission line and hence simulating them to understand both the steady state and dynamic behavior of the system. Data used is collected from the Internet. Due to the limitations of load handling (480units) to the processors of RTDS and no. of racks we have simulated at 400kV system by reducing this system.
