dc.description.abstract | Weirs and sluice gates are widely used devices for flow diversion and flow measurement. Two forms of each of these devices are the normal device and the side device. These devices are particular cases of skew devices which are aligned obliquely with the channel axis. The present study was undertaken to develop a method for obtaining the discharge passing through skew weirs and sluice gates. Equations for elementary discharge coefficient for skew weirs and sluice gates have been obtained experimentally. These equations describe the behavior of elementary discharge coefficient for wide ranges of the parameters involved. The elementary discharge coefficient occurs in the governing differential equations. Solution of these equations yielded the discharge passing through these devices. Experimental program consisted of a large number of runs covering wide ranges of independent variables namely weir head to weir height ratio, upstream water depth to gate opening ratio, tail water depth to gate opening ratio and skew angle. (i) The practical utility of the study has been demonstrated by obtaining the discharge through skew weirs and sluice gates having various plan shapes. The numerical algorithm was verified experimentally for the bifold skew weirs and sluice gates. | en_US |
