In seismic prospecting the detection of thin beds is intimately related to the question of vertical resolution. The extent to which a thin bed could be detected on seismic sections is related to the wavelength of seismic pulse and the depth at which such a bed exists. The vertical resolution gets degraded with depth. However existence of thin and ultra-thin bed cannot be ruled out in a sedimentary basin. We can also arrive at important results by comparing variation of amplitude with attenuation and without attenuation. The response of thin beds is found to differ in important aspects when the thickness of thin bed becomes much smaller than tuning thickness and the signals are of same or opposite polarity. Values of velocity, quality factor and attenuation coefficient show great difference when frequency is in smaller range.en_US
