Inflammatory diseases and cancer are serious health problems for mankind. Many antiinflammatory and a few anticancer drugs are available in the market. Most of the drugs used clinically have serious side effects and hence there is a need for development of safer antiinflammatory and more active anticancer drugs. The survey of literature reveals that many workers have reported synthesis, antiinflammatory and/or anticancer activity of pyrazine, pyridine, pyrimidine, condensed pyrimidine, porphyrins and metalloporphyrins derivatives. In continuation of our work in this direction, we have synthesized a number of pyridine, pyrazine, pyrimidine, pyrimidobenzimidazole, hemin & hematoporphyrin derivatives and evaluated them for their antiinflammatory, analgesic and/or anticancer activities. The heterocyclic compounds synthesized have donor atoms and can form complexes with metals. Synthesized compounds can be used for the determination of metals by using them as extractant or colour developing reagents or materials for preparing membranes which can be used as ion selective electrodes (ISEs). We have, therefore, investigated synthesized compounds for their possible use as electroactive materials for preparing membranes to be employed in ISEs. Out of thirty one compounds synthesized, six could be used successfully as electroactive materials for preparing new ISEs which can determine Zn(ll), Cu(ll), Ni(ll), Cd(II) and Pb(II). Thus the present thesis reports synthesis, characterization, antiinflammatory, analgesic and/or anticancer activity evaluation of thirty one heterocyclic compounds and also deals with utilization of some of the compounds in preparing ISEs for analytical purpose. A brief summary of the results obtained is presented here. For the sake of clarity, the work embodied in this thesis has been divided in to five chapters. FIRST CHAPTER consists of four parts i.e. la, lb, Ic and Id. la: Inflammation inhibitors and anticancer agents:It deals with the recent work reported in literature on the synthesis, antiinflammatory and/or anticancer activity evaluation of pyrazine, pyridine, pyrimidine and condensed pyrimidine derivatives. lb: Porphyrins and Metalloporphyrins as anticancer agents: It describe the recent work reported in literature on the synthesis of porphyrins, metalloporphyrins and their usefulness as potential anticancer agents and utilization in photodynamic therapy of cancer. Ic: Heterocyclic compounds as Analytical reagents: Recent work reported in literature on the determination of Zn(II), Cu(ll), Ni(ll), Cd(II) and Pb(II) using heterocyclic compounds is described. Id: Utilization of heterocyclic compounds as electroactive materials in developing ion selective electrodes: In this part a brief introduction of ion selective electrodes and the recent work on the use of heterocyclic compounds as electroactive materials for preparing ion selective electrode for determining metal ions is described. Various compounds synthesized and reported in chapters two and three were characterized by IR, 'lINMR and Mass (HRMS, HRES, LRES MS, FABMS) spectra and in some cases by elemental analysis. SECOND CHAPTER is divided in to two parts i.e. 2a and 2b. Part 2a deals with synthesis of some pyridine (IVa-e) and pyrazine (Va-e) derivatives by following reaction scheme 2a. 1..............en_US
