Abstract: In the context of maximizing service to the population with the available resources, it is essential that wastewater engineer should take recourse to optimal design. The dissertation work presented herein addresses itself to the development of computer based methodology for optimal design of a trunk sewer line. As it is practically impossible to select the best from all feasible design alternatives, a computer based mathematical programming technique in identifying optimal solution is essential. The problem has been formulated as a linear programming problem and is solved using sequential simplex method. The sewer line is also designed as per Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) Manual (1993) for south Moradabad city and cost is estimated. The design thus obtained has been compared with optimal design.
