The socio-economic developments of any community generates demand for transportation. With the advent of automobiles the mobility of people has increased. With the increasing mobility levels conflicts occur on roads. Depending upon the speed of travel the resulting accidents and their severity increase. Annually half a million people are losing their lives in accidents around the world. It is estimated that 50% of these deaths are occuring in developing countries where percapita vehicle ownership is far below than that of the developed countries. In India annually 65,000 people are losing their lives due to road accidents and this amounts to 25% of the total deaths in the developed world. Further about 15% of there accidents are occuring in urban areas of the country. As per the available records about 2000 persons are getting killed in Delhi alone. Due to the gravity of the situation many efforts have been attempted in past to minimise these road accidents and it is felt to study accident characteristics. For developing remedial measures, thorough understanding of the accident characteristics in present era is essential. With this aspects in view a study has been taken up to assess the traffic accident characteristics in Delhi and in particular in south Delhi. In Delhi reportedly 19.19, fatalities per one lack population and fatalities per 10,000 motor vehicles were 7.5.
