High strength concrete, one of the new building materials, is going to be used world wide as a structural material in the construction of buildings and other structures. In building, it has been extensively used in column. In India or abroad, there is no code for the design of HSC. Due to the lack of any design information, its use is not so popular. In existing practice, the code for normal strength concrete is used for it. There are several advantages in using HSC in building construction, the principal are being the economic benefits derived from its use in column. Advantages of concrete in the high strength range include greater load carrying capacity, smaller member size and reduced dead loads. Reduced member sizes increase the amount of rentable space and specially beneficial when there are architectural restriction on column sizes. In the dissertation work an attempt has been made to study the economy of HSC in construction of column of a selected typical building plan. Study has been carried out for 10 and 15 storey building having same plan. 2-D computer analysis have been done for external and internal frames with sufficient accuracy. As a part of study, a computer program has been developed in 'C' for design of columns. This program also facilitate to get the cost of column having the rate of construction materials. The design of column is based on IS:456-1978 with limit state approach.en_US
