Abstract: This dissertation work presents the design and development of a personal computer (IBM PC/ AT compatible) based scheme for testing protective relays. Precise and comprehensive testing of relay is essential to make sure that the protective gear always operates reliably on faults. Due to standardization of PCs, their low cost and the availability of software and hardware support, a PC based relay test scheme enables comprehensive testing of relays, quite accurately and in short time. The test procedure simulates realistic relaying signals corresponding to dynamic state operating conditions. A PC based data acquisition card has been used to test static relay circuits. -Single phase as well as 3-phase relay testing scheme has been developed. Distance relay testing is chosen as typical example for implementing this scheme. Complete software is written using C language and for making characteristic plots, Graphics has been used. On-line parameter display and on-line plotting are the key features of this scheme.
