dc.description.abstractElectrostatic precipitator technology was developed in the United States by Dr. Frederick Gardner Cottrell at the turn of the century. Since then it has proved successful in a number of ore processing, chemical, cement and thermal power plants. This is widely used for industrial gas cleaning when mean diameter of the major portion of the particulate matter is less than 50 lam. With proper rapping arrangement it can handle dust loading of the range of 30-35 gm/m3. Recently it has been applied to air conditioning equipments. Because of its wide range of use, its size also ranges widely. So for accommodating this and other design complexities such as due to particle size variation and flow rate distribution, it has become imperative to use Computer Aided Design software for easy and quick design of ESP units. It also becomes easy to compare electrostatic precipitator performance operating in industrial conditions with the design calculations. The installation cost for an ESP amounts to about 2-6 percent of the total cost of the plant but the maintenance cost is quite low. The energy requirement of the ESP is of the order of 0.11 to 1.18 KWh/1000 m3 of the gasen_US
