Abstract: In a flat topography, cost of sewerage network becomes more because depth of excavation becomes large in downstream portions and also the size of sewers increases in these portion. When compared to this, pumping of sewage upto a higher level at some intermediate location for further course of sewage flow can prove to be economical. So, installation of sewage pumping station at a suitable location is required. A mathematical model considering the design problem for a sewer line with an intermediate pumping station as a cost optimisation problem has been developed. This model gives the optimal location of sewage pumping station and also optimal sizes and slopes of various links thus giving overall optimal design of sewer line. This model uses linear programming technique to reach at optimal design and optimality of pump installation at each manhole is tested one by one. This model may be applied for design of sewer line and it can also be extended to design the whole sewerage network part-wise.
