Abstract: | Thermal power station are producing millions tones of fuel ash This fuel ash is a hazardous waste material and creating the disposal problems to engineers. The pressure on dumping ponds along with the environmental requirement of keeping this waste fuel ash submerged in water has been increasingly engaging the attention of Civil Engineers towards finding an alternative environmental friendly solution. Over the past few decades, attempts have been made to manufacture coarse aggregate out of the fuel ash and use them to make lightweight structural concrete. In this dissertation, attempts have been made to present the state of the art information available in regard to manufacturing coarse aggregates, preparation of concretes, their properties and design recommendations of ACI, BS8110, CEB/FIP. It has been found that the use of manufactured coarse aggregate concretes is advantageous and economically viable in flexural members. This aspect has been studied in details in the form of structural floor systems for multistory buildings. Attempts have been made to show the advantageous in terms of savings in the quantities of steel and concrete by analysis and design of slab-beam and flat slab systems. Key Words: Manufactured coarse aggregate, Lightweight structural concrete, Slab-beam floor, Flat slab floors. |
