Conventional methods of design for pumping mains results in the overdesign of the system, thus resulting in wastage of limited public funds. In the recent past, some work on optimal and duplicate design of pumping mains has been carried out but no efficient algorithm has been developed as yet. The present work has been carried out to achieve this. Non-linear unconstrained optimization is used to arrive at the optimal solution for the cost function involving the pipe and continuously varying energy cost. The decision variables are the diameter, DI of the initial installment, diameter D2 of the duplicate and the time of duplication. A parametric study has also been carried out to study the sensitivity of cost function and the decision variables to the variation of input variables which are of geometric, kinematic and dynamic natureen_US
