Abstract: | Cancer and inflammatory diseases are serious problems with which human kind suffer and for these diseases satisfactory treatments are wanting. Sufficiently large number of antiinflammatory and a few anticancer drugs are available in the market but most of these have serious sideeffects. Thisnecessitates a need forthe development of saferandeffective anticancer and antiinflammatory drugs. All over the world, a number of laboratories are engaged in this field of research which is quite evident from the large number of patents and research papers published every year in the area described. Efforts have also been made by us in this direction which are illustrated in this thesis. For the sake of clarity, the work embodied in the thesis has been divided into five chapters. FIRST CHAPTER consists of two parts la and lb. la : Porphyrins and Metalloporphyrins : It describes the recentworkreported in literature on the synthesis ofporphyrins, metalloporphyrins and their usefulness aspotential anticancer agents and utilization in photodynamic therapy of cancer. lb : Inflammation Inhibitors :- It deals with the recent work reported in literature on the synthesis and antiinflammatory activity evaluation of pyrimidine, imidazole, benzimidazole, thiazole, thiazoline, acridine, thiourea derivatives and some other related biologically potent heterocyclic compounds. Various compounds synthesized and reported in the following chapters were characterized by the use of IR, 'H NMR, Mass (HRMS, LRES MS, FAB MS) and elemental analyses. SECOND CHAPTER contains synthesis, characterization and anticancer activity screening of hemin (IHa-m, IV), deuteroporphyrin (VI) andmetalloporphyrin (VII) derivatives (Scheme 2.1) ......................... |
