Abstract: The technological advancements over the last several years have necessitated the machines to be operated under more exact, precise, and stringent operating conditions. To obtain a reliable performance from the machines, it has become imperative that the design of bearings be based on more accurately predicted design data. The multirecess hydrostatic/hybrid journal bearing system provides excellent performance, i.e., improved load carrying capacity, better fluid film stiffness and large fluid film damping. These features make them suitable for many engineering applications. Continuous efforts of several investigators concerning the design of journal bearings have paved the way for extracting improved performance from them. Many researchers have reported that substantial improvements in bearing performance can be achieved b y properly choosing the required parameters o f the bearing a long with geometric shape. It has been established that improvement in the stability of radially loaded hydrodynamic bearings can be obtained by selecting the noncircular shapes, of bearings, i.e., multilobed, offset, pressure dam bearings instead of circular bearings. The optimal solution for the desired static and dynamic performance of bearings can be achieved by selecting a proper geometrical attributes of the chosen bearings. Extensive attempts have been made to arrive at a suitable geometry of bearing, recess/ pocket and related parameters namely, land to width ratio, number of pockets and their orientations, etc. to obtain an improved performance of hydrostatic/hybrid journal bearing system.
