Abstract: Indian Institute of Technology - Roorkee is among the foremost of institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in basic and applied research. After converting the University of Roorkee into the IIT Roorkee, a lot of changes are taking up in the infrastructure and other facilities. The major changes being the development of roads. Construction of many new roads is also being proposed in the nearing future. The existing road maps of IIT Roorkee were prepared long back and do not contain recent changes. Usage of GIS technology may be considered as the essential prerequisite for careful physical spatial planning to make optimum use of the roads as communication links for all seasons as a great amount of money are invested in planning and construction activities of the roads. In this dissertation different possible alternate road route alignments of the IIT Roorkee roads and infrastructure management were found using GIS. This GIS based Road Infrastructure Management System capabilities were identification of critical damaged areas, planning, implementing and monitoring precautionary maintenance in the short term, enhancing safety and taking advantage of databases and models useful to design network adjustment.
