dc.description.abstractMedium rise buildings have become one of the impressive reflections of today's India due to migration of people from rural to urban areas and due to lack of land in metropolitan areas. There are three major factors to consider in the design of such structures: strength, rigidity, and stability. The strength requirement is the dominant factor in the design of multi storied buildings. However as the height increases, the rigidity and stability requirements become more important and they often play the important rule in the design. There are two ways to fulfill the requirements in a structure. The first is to increase the size of the members beyond and above the strength requirements. However this approach has its own limits, beyond which it becomes either impractical or uneconomical to increase the sizes. The second and more elegant approach-is to change the form of the structure into something more rigid and stable to keep the deformation in the check and increase stability. Wall-Frame system is one such and most commonly used building system. Appropriate placement of shear wall and combination of shear walls, called as shear core further enhances the performance of the building. In the present study, an effort has been made to find performance of the building by the provision of the shear core in it. This can be done by comparing various parameters like inter storey drift, total drift etc. A study on the effects that are going to occur in the strength and stability of the structure by the provision of openings in different cases such as symmetrical openings, openings at different position at the same floor level etc. Hence this study is highly relevant in the present day Indian context.en_US
