Abstract: The present work deals with behaviour of simply supported and clamped rectangular plates loaded under an eccentrically placed concentrated load. The study has been conducted using the finite element method, and also by the theoretical solution. Comparison has been made between these two methods, to investigate if there is a significant difference in accuracy. Available design charts for plates loaded under an eccentric concentrated load are very limited in scope. In this thesis, it has been demonstrated how to prepare design charts for a plate loaded under an eccentric concentrated load using the finite element method, which is applicable to any complex problem. The analysis has been done using a flat shell element and a couple of 3D brick elements. Exhaustive analysis of behaviour of rectangular plate under an eccentric concentrated load has been studied. The parameters considered were support conditions, load area to plate area ratio, aspect ratio of plate and eccentricity and eccentricity of load along two axes.
