Issue Date: 2005
Abstract: Management is defined as [1] The act, manner, or practice of managing; handling, supervisioh, or control. Solid Waste Transport Management using GIS aims at supervision or control of transportation of solid waste or garbage in general. Garbage is a side effect of every production process. In metros like Delhi with population over 1.5 crores, timely garbage collection can take a complex face. Garbage collection is a scheduled process both in terms of time and route. When this schedule is not followed it becomes a reason of grievance for people of that community. It leads to bad odor and spread of disease. To solve this problem a system must come into existence that provides information regarding when (Time) and where (Location) of garbage collection. This information must come directly to people without or minimal human interference. When there is a human interference in information flow often there is misinterpretation of information. Human interference also leads to delays in the process. This-thesis intends to present a web-based solution to the process of management of transport activity used to collect garbage. This thesis describes complete architecture with components to achieve defined objectives. It also introduces novel product like Oracle Spatial database MapViewer web GIS interface which are new to the world of GIS. This thesis also shows a more user-friendly face of GIS with all the complex GIS activities hidden in the backhand. It also introduces how GIS and GPS in tandem work to achieve defined objectives.
