Abstract: Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) offer technology-based solutions to the compelling challenges confronting surface transportation systems. ITS helps the whole transport system to work most effectively and efficiently. ITS integrates users, transport systems, and vehicles through state-of-the-art information and ,communications technologies. Advanced Traveller Information Systems, one of the user services of ITS, offer the promise of better informed travel decisions and more efficient use of transportation infrastructure. A geographic information system (GIS) is a digital computer application designed for the capture, storage, manipulation, analysis and display of geographic information. Transportation professionals can use GIS to integrate mapping analysis into decision support for network planning and analysis, route planning and analysis, vehicle tracking, routing, asset management, inventory tracking and everything in between. In this thesis, an Advanced Traveller Information System for Delhi city (ATISNewDelhi) has been developed in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 by using the Geomedia Professional and Geomedia Transportation Manager objects. This custom application provides complete information of Delhi city such as road network, historical places, hospitals, hotels, auditoria, petrol pumps, bus, Delhi metro, and railway stations. This system displays best path between an origin and destination (or) a set of places, paths to closest facilities on map and also provides path directions based on distance and travel time. Information regarding city bus routes, Delhi metro train fare and frequency, inter state bus services and inter city trains has been included in the application. ATISNewDelhi also provides tools for panning, zooming, viewing the images of important places and printing the Delhi map view.
