The analyses of self weight, hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, thermal and seismic response of an arch-cum-gravity dam proposed for Sawalkot hydro electric project, Jammu and Kashmir is carried out by using ANSYS 7.1 software package in this dissertation. To do so, three-dimensional models of the spillway portion, right and left non-flow portions are prepared using this software package. The boundary conditions taken for the three-dimensional model include base restrained in all the three directions (x, y, z) and sides restrained only in z-direction. The analysis is done for the three-dimensional model, for different loading cases, such as dam empty condition i.e. subjected to only self weight, water pressure on the upstream side varying from zero at the water surface and maximum at the base, hydrodynamic pressure is calculated using IS:1893-1984 code and applied on the upstream side, thermal analysis is carried out by increasing the temperature by 18 0c from normal temperature and dynamic analysis is done using response spectrum method. The results obtained by ANSYS 7.1 are compared by approximate methods for self weight, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressures. The results obtained from ANSYS 7.1 consist of stresses and displacements at different nodes, and are presented using contours and tabular forms. Different types of load combinations are also applied as per IS: 6512 — 1984.en_US
