The objective of this dissertation report is to model and analyze- small signal torsional oscillations such as Sub synchronous resonance (SSR) characteristic of a Thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC) compensated power system The power system used in this study is the IEEE first benchmark model for SSR analysis. A new model of TCSC is used in the study which includes the complete model of the controller. The turbine shaft, the generator and the TCSC are modeled using linearized equations. TCSC is regulated by a simple PI controller and a phase locked loop (PLL). The torsional characteristics are studied through eigenvalue analysis and the results are validated through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation studies.en_US
