Though there are differences in the way public domain has been interpreted and articulated in different societies and at different stages of history, the basic premise in all cases has been its quality of 'publicness'. It is an integral part of the built environment, comprising of all enclosed as well as open space; that can be freely accessed and used. Public domain ensures the needs and welfare of the public in all realms of urban living. In complex multifunctional areas attracting people in large numbers, the presence of legible public domain can help resolve chaos and stress. It acts to unite segregated areas, adding cohesiveness to the built environment. Public domain and its protection has been an issue of concern since ancient times, and in the present context, has become a most critical one. Due to increased urbanization and its related problems, public domain is under constant threat in the contemporary scenario. Changing trends in the society are reflected in the way public space is misused. Encroachments, changed usage, etc affect the quality of 'publicness' of public spaces. These factors contribute to weakening the public domain. The impact of increased development in higher density urban areas can see public spaces becoming fragmented and poorly designed spaces with little functional use unless there are good planning and urban design guidelines in place. There is a subsequent lack of amenity and connectivity for people, as well as having poor environmental outcomes. Further, spiraling real estate costs, low availability of land and lack of funds, act as impediments to the creation of new public space.en_US
