Abstract: Reinforced concrete framed systems are a popular structural system for high rise buildings in India. When a framed structure exceed ten to twelve stories in height , the beam and column sizes work out to be relatively large and often there is congestion of reinforcement at the beam column junctions. In order to avoid these practical difficulties , shear walls or shear boxes or core are introduced in structural planning of multi-storied buildings . In tall structures containing both frames and shear walls there is an interaction between shear walls and frames and they jointly share applied horizontal loads. The vertical cantilever behaviour of shear wall results in bending mode of deflection whereas the frame undergoes shear mode of deflection under horizontal load However due to infinite rigidity of the floor diaphragms, the shear walls and frames have the san deflection at each floor as a result of which the final behaviour of these elements is modified each floor and this aspect is analytically investigated in this thesis as shear wall-frame interactic The shear wall —frame interaction problem is basically a problem of `allocation analysis' by whit share of horizontal load resisted by each vertical resisting element is to be ultimately found on t] basis of their compatibility of deformations. The emphasis in this investigation has been c calculation of the floor displacements in symmetrical multi-storied framed RCC structures wi shear walls from first principles .A computer program has been developed in the C++ language implement the method of converging approximations originally proposed by Khan and Sbouran for `allocation analysis' of shear wall—frame structures. The effects of torsion have been neglects in the analysis. The floor deflections of the shear wall-frame structure obtained as the output fro the program for a given building configuration can be used subsequently to determine the share the lateral loads resisted by the frames and shear walls individually. A parametric study wit respect to the influence of building height and properties of shear walls on the shear wall-fram interaction has been carried out and results are compared with those available from STAAD.Prc 2006.
