Abstract: Increasing population levels, rapid economic growth and rise in community living standard accelerates the generation rate of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Indian cities. Improper management of MSW causes hazards to inhabitants. The solid waste management rules are in role since 2000, but the present scenario in most of the Indian cities is same. The solid waste rules are not properly implemented in the cities yet, because of which river pollution is also not abated properly. Gwalior city is no exception for the SWM thus the city has been chosen as the study area for Solid Waste Management (SWM). The requisite improvement in the condition of the waste management is not feasible due to lack of awareness among the stakeholders, waste workers, sanitary staff etc., also low priority is given to the budget ands the implementation of the solid waste management. The important point is that the facility is to be charged as if the facility is available free of cost nobody will be bothered about the efficacy of the system. The present system of the Gwalior has studied in the thesis and it was found that storage and collection of waste is insufficient and infrequent, open dumping is followed. Looking into the condition of the waste management, gap between the management practices followed and rules, the SWM of the city is proposed in the present work. The aspects which are considered are storage and collection, transfer and transport and treatment and disposal including cost estimate and the sustainability of the system is also verified. The proposed system shall have the features like adequate storage and collection, proper transport and processing of waste prior to disposal by sanitary landfilling. The author hopes that the thesis will be utilized for the implementation by Municipal Corporation Gwalior.
