Inflammatory diseases and cancer continue to beserious health problems for human kind. Sufficiently large number of antiinflammatory and a few anticancer drugs are available in the market. Most of these drugs have serious side effects and hence there is a need for the development of safer and effective antiinflammatory and anticancer drugs. A number of laboratories all over the world are engaged in this field of research which is quite evident from the large number of research papers and patents published every year inthe area described. Efforts have also been made by us in this direction which are illustrated in this thesis. For the sakeof clarity, the work embodied in the thesishas beendivided intofive chapters. FIRST CHAPTER consists oftwo parts la and lb la : Inflammation inhibitors and anticancer agents :It deals withthe recent work reported in literature onthe synthesis, antiinflammatory andanticancer activity evaluation ofpyrimidine, condensed pyrimidine, acridine derivatives and some other related biologically potent heterocyclic compounds. lb : Porphyrins and metalloporphyrins : It describes the recent work reported in literature on the synthesis of porphyrins, metalloporphyrins and their usefulness as potential anticancer agents and utilization in photodynamic therapy of cancer. Various compounds synthesized and reported in the following chapters were characterized by IR, HNMR and Mass (HUMS, EIMS, LRES MS, I'ABMS) spectraand in somecasesby elemental analyses. ......................en_US
