Abstract: | The statistical information about the failures in theworking of devices can be used for improving the construction of existing ones and developing new ones as well as in the analysis of their production. This calls for development of the general methods of Reliability Theory to make it suitable for the failure analysis of protective schemes of large Power Systems. Failure of a protective scheme may lead to great financial loss and adverse consequences. Therefore the failure analysis of a protective scheme needs thorough investigation. The present work discusses mainly the followings 1. General methods of Reliability Theory, including the discussion of different failure distributions. 2. Failure analysis of maintained and non-maintained systems for different mathematical models usually encountered in Reliability analysis. 3. Component failures, their reasons and the effect of their failure on the system containing these components. 4. Protective relays whether conventional or otherwise operate under different conditions and this calls for modification of reliability principles for application to their failure analysis. 5. Detailed analysis of Selective and non-selective operation of relays. 6. Different techniques of reliability evaluation of a complex system and their usefulness in reliability assessment |
