Of all the malfunctions with which man suffers, cancer and inflammatory diseases are still serious problems for which satisfactory treatments are wanting. A few anti-cancer and a sufficiently large number of anti-inflammatory drugs are available in the market but most of these have serious side effects. This necessitates a need for the development of effective and safer anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory drugs. Number of laboratories all over the world are engaged in this field of research which is quite evident by the large number cf research papers and patents published every year in the area described. Efforts have also been made by us in this direction which are illustrated in this thesis. For convenience and clarity of presentation, the subject matter of this thesis has been divided into five chapters. FIRST CHAPTER consists of two parts la and lb. la. Porphyrins and Metalloporphyrins : It describes the recent work reported in literature on the synthesis of porphyrins, metalloporphyrins and their usefulness as potential anti-cancer agents and utilization in photodynamic therapy of cancer. lb. Inflammation Inhibitors : It deals with the recent work reported in literature on the synthesis and anti-inflammatory evaluation of pyrimidine, alkanoic acid, imidazole and benzlmidazole derivatives and some other related biologically potent heterocyclic compounds. Various compounds synthesized and reported in the following chapters were characterized by the use of IR, NMR, Mass, (HRMS; CIMS and FABMS) and elemental analyses. (lv) SECOND CHAPTER contains syntheses and characterization of deuterioporphyrins (Illa-j) and metalloporphyrins (IVa-j) coupled with acodazole (I) and naphthothlophene (II). ...............en_US
