Issue Date: 2006
Abstract: A novel cross shaped electromagnetic structure is developed that is characterized by high surface impedance and which behaves as an Electromagnetic Band Gap structure. Parametric studies have been performed to obtain design guidelines for the EBG structure and it is then optimized for operation at C band. Three techniques, including analytical and simulation techniques, have been employed to find and confirm the band gap of the structure. The designed EBG has been employed for performance enhancement in various applications. It has been employed for reducing the mutual coupling between the elements of a 2x1 microstrip patch antenna array. The designed EBG is also employed as reflector for dipole and slot antennas to reduce the profile and increase in the gain of these antennas. All this work has been done using simulations on Zeland's IE3D simulation software
