This dissertation primarily deals with principle of working, types, transmission properties and application of optical fibre. Development chronology in optical fibre technology is followed by fundamentals of fibre optics. Worth pinpointing highlights in use of optical fibre in instrumentation are that they are electrical insulators and are free from currents. Therefore they are specially suitable for use in hazardous environment. Operation of optical fibre is immune to electromagnetic interference. They are suitable for military applications where low weight and signal security are important. Uptodate published literature on different applications' of optical fibres have beenreviewed. It has been shown that optical fibre can be conveniently used as a sensor for displacement, strain, pressure, acceleration, temperature, voltage, current etc.en_US
