Abstract: The aim of the system planner is to ensure 'a quality, economic and reliable supply to the consumers. This requires an evaluation of large number of alternative possible plans and screen out the alternatives that do not meet the desired reliabi-lity criterion. This may be done using any of the available methods of reliability analysis of generation systems. This dissertation describes the various methods available for generation planning and application of modern statistical methods in generation planning. The method used in the present work is based on the evaluation of statistical moments and cugu-lants and the use of the Gram-Charlier series expansion to power system reliability calculations. The method used is computation-ally efficient and accurate and is very useful in partially solving, many of the modelling problems faced by the system planners. The first chapter of the thesis gives an outline. of the power system planning problems and highlights the generation planning aspect. The Chapter II describes the various methods of generation planning while Chapter III provides the details of the approxi-mate series method (also known as cumulant method). The results of the method for IEEE reliability test systems are given in Chapter IV. The results of sensitivity analysis for the series are also included in this chapter. The last chapter concludes with the inferences obtained from the results and suggests the areas-. of applications of the series.
