dc.description.abstract"An Excitation System is the source of field current for excitation of principal electric machine, including means for its control". An excitation system, therefore: includes all of the equipment required to supply field current to excite a principal electric machine which. may be an s. c. or d. c. machine and the regulating equipment to regulate or control the amount of field current. Basically it consists of Exciter Unit, field rheostat, voltage regulator, and field suppression equipment. A magnetic amplifier excitation system is a completely static excitation system, in -which the power required to excite the exciter is directly taken from the output of magnetic amplifier voltage regulator. A magnetic amplifier is nothing but simply a reactor rectifier combination, in tiich a small control current can control the large d, c. output power. The salient features of this system over the conventional systems are $ 1. System is completely static so components inherently possess long life, mechanical maintenance is absent. ,c 1 2. There is no aarmup time so that conversion equipment is available Immediately. 4 4 ; 3. Lesser floor space required and the weight is low, also these are no foundation problems, 4. System is more reliable 5. High efficiency, etc.en_US
