Por the better performance of a power system and for increased stability greater reliance has to be placed on well designed control equipment. Since voltage regulator and governor are the main components of the control loop, it is important to know how their various parameters affect the system stability and the system performance. In the present work this problem has been taken up and is analysed in two ,parts. In Part I, the study deals with the'transient stabil-ity' aspect. Liapunov's direct method is used to find the asymptotically stable region and to generate the Liapunov'e function Cartwright method is used. The system squat ion is of third order. Then the Popov's inequality criterion is used to get the stability boundaries in the parameter plane. In Part -II the case of 'Dynamic Stability' is consi-dered, a characteristic equation, expressed as a function of adjustable parameters has been obtained to describe the system behaviour for small disturbances. The parameter plans method due to Siljak, has been applied to study effect of voltage regulator and governor parameters on system stability.en_US
