The quest for an adjustable speed alternating current drive continues even to-day. Squirrel cage induc-tion motor is considered to be most popular alternating current shunt characteristic drive because of its simp_ licity, ruggedness and cheapness, but it suffers from the disadvantage that it is not easily adaptable as an adjustable speed motor. Developmental work is going on in employing solid state devices for obtaining speed control. At the present stage of development of solid state devices it is thought, that with the inclusion of speed control gear, it loses to an extents the very advantage of its simplicity and reliability.en_US
