The H.V. D. C. transmission has definitely many more ad vantages over a.c. specifically economic advantages. It is r link between two s.c. systems. It is essential to have on experimental study tool for h.v.d.c. system in Labora►tori es . The Fault Simulator has been designed with the object of providing a low cost h.v.d.c. representation which retain all essential features of a true h.v.d.c. system. The thesis is a part of development of h.v.d.c. fault simulator and deals with the fault •initiation device and protection of the h.v.d.c. system. The practical setup using 3Mphsse series bridge rectifier with constant current control to keep the current within prescribed limit, for d. c. trans- mission and two different type of invertors have been deve-lo.ed. One of the ir~vertore has frequency changing technique. Other invertor is of s.c. line commutated type. A fault ini-tiation switch has been fabricated for providing different type of faults. Thyristore have been used in place of mercury are valves as these have got many more advantages over valve and will be used for further study of its application in transmission of d. c. power.en_US
