dc.description.abstractFloods cause serious threat to human settlements since ancient periods. They are the most dangerous calamity among all other natural disasters. Rapid urbanization of river basins and encroachments of flood plains in last three to four decades increased flood damages substantially. In developed countries flood mitigation practices are well established. These practices are described in chapter 2. Flood water propagates from one depression to other depression. Hence flood plain is divided in to number of' cells taking in to consideration its topographical features. Mathematical modeling of flood plain (continuity equation) is derived in chapter 3. Various terms, comprising cell continuity equation are derived in chapter 4. During flood development and recession, variations in surface area covered by water of each depression are large, similarly continuity equation needs to be modified for smaller depths, and also flood events are many times encountered by rainfalls. These effects are taken in to account in chapter 5. Flood loss estimation for a particular flooding event is a very complex task. Huge extend of flooding, less number of' observation stations and misleading information are main causes. Damage assessment procedures for agricultural, household and industrial field are described in chapter 6. Conclusions made from the work and scope of future work is listed in chapter 7. It"en_US
