The geohydrological studies were carried out in the Southern parts of the Basantar — Devak interfluve located in Jammu, district, J & K State. The whole of the area is constituted of Alluvium of various grade. The available strata charts of the existing exploratory bore holes have been used to prepare geological fence diagram which is used to understand the subsurface lithological configuration of various strata in the area. Eight number of dug well were monitored during the year 2003 and groundwater table behaviour was observed. The observed groundwater table data has been used to prepare the depth to water table and watertable elevation contour maps. Through the analysis of these maps, important conclusion in regard to behaviour of groundwater table are arrived at. Fifteen groundwater samples including five from deep aquifers and eleven from shallow aquifer were collected and analysed for major ions. The physicochemical data thus obtained has been utilized to judge the quality of water for drinking and domestic. purposes. The data has been - represented by employing various graphical techniques i.e. Stiff, Piper — Trilinear and U.S. Laboratory classification and thus classified into various hydrochemical facies and classes of water for irrigation purposes. Besides, the groundwater samples collected from various locations in the field are analysed for environmental tritium analyses to identify and find out the recharge and discharge zones and age of the groundwater of the area, respectively.en_US
