The significance of renewable energy has become more pronounced in the changing global energy scenario. Most of the developing nations are poor in conventional fossil fuel resources and have to import them at the expense of their meager foreign exchange reserves. The depletable nature of fossil fuels have forced all nations alike to promote and plan their development programmes on increased use of renewable energy sources. Energy is vital for a healthy and dynamic rural growth which can arrest the socio-political friction emanating from the mass migration of rural people to the urban centres. Rural development requires upgrading the overall basic living environment of rural life. This warrants a phenomenal increase in the use of energy in some form or the other in rural areas. Traditional techniques of meeting this burgeoning energy demand are regressive in human as well as environmental terms. Thus there is need to set up integrated systems by way of decentralized energy system at the village level or the rural energy centres. These centres are so designed to exploit the available energy sources to meet the basic energy requirement of the area at the outset. In due course, the role of these centres needs to be expanded to encompass agriculture and small scale industrial activities. The integration or matching of the appropriate resources/technologies vis-a-vis energy demand of a rural centre necessitates employing rural energy planning using modelling, simulation and optimization.en_US
