An analytical photogrammetric sys+teQmm ffoorr eexxtteerrnnaa.l monitoring of large engineering structures, such as power cams, has heen deveioped mthe present research. The system offers specif, advantage o, dehver.ng .nstantaneous Wormation of spat.ai deformans over the preva.hng geodet.c methods whlch are t.me consuming, weather dependent and often erroneous due ,c the listing „me iag dur.ng conserve sets of ohservations. The computer aided mon.tor.ng system deveioped Herein Uhased on the princ.pie of iterative solut,on of eouations of coh.near.ty in wh.ch the input data consrsts of ground coordmates of contro, po.nts and image coordmates of contro, and targe.ted poln,s iocated on the face of the dam be.ng mon.tored. The output may he ob,ained either as the ahsciute spat.a, coordmates of targeted points or the 'deformations' (or the spati•al• movemenr,+tsc)1 onff tthhee ttaarrgeeettted points alongwith their var.ance-covanance matrices onrr npaarraammeetteerrss of error ellipsoids with confidence limits. Acommon practical probiem for a photogrammetric monUoring system Uthe avai.abi.ity of suitab.e contro, points which are of, the structure being monitored. Anew approach, named as Nation approach, has, therefore, been proposed and testified I. «h,s research in which the contro, po.nts are ,oca,ed of. the dam structure on the h.„s forming banks of the river. Th.s approach is su.tah.e , fachties o, measurement of angies of rotat.on o, camera axes are ava.iahie a.ongw.th the precise know.edge of camera eccentr.cty constants. The theoret.ca, and practicai aspects of the ach.evahle accuracy from the proposed system have been .nvest.gated and analysed. (iv) ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The author expresses his deep sense of gratitude to Dr. R.S.
