The capacity expansion of system is to minimize the present value of cost of sequence of projects selected to satisfy a projected demand. The demand for power and water is estimated on the basis of expected growth of population and development of industrial units. Dynamic programming is being utilised as an effective tool for these systems involving capacity expansion. The projects are sequenced in such way that the present value of cost will be minimum. The specific problem in question is of obtaining a sequene of development of the power projects •for capacity expansion of a large tidal power system. The system consists of 200 nos. of units. Data have been analysed for various demand patterns as the demand pattern is not available for this study. The approach is to arrive at a suitable methodology to identify minimum cost sequencing of units in tidalpower project for its development subjected to technological, economical & policy constraints. A capacity expansion model has been developed for Ithis problem. The objective function of model may be the minimization of present value of cost or maximisation of present value of benefits. Many constraints have been attached to this model to facilitate (solve) various field problems. Further, a deterministic backward dynamic programming process for tackling the project sequencing problem, has been evolved and used suitabily. An available computer prograsme has been suitibly modified and used for sequencing. This program is efficient flexible, convenient and useful tools for obtaining sequencing of hydropower system. It can be applied for water resource system, water supply system, v.i_ i construction of tubewells etc.en_US
