Issue Date: 1994
Abstract: Reservoir is a source of supply for various water uses by harnessing the flood flows. In a water resource system, for efficient utilization of water potential, optimal operation of the reservoirs in the system is very much required. For efficient utilization of water resources, the assessment of various alternatives management strategies and evaluation of performance of the system is necessary. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the performance of the system for different combination of reservoirs and demands. Altogether six reservoirs consisting of existing (Tenughat, Konar, Panchet, Tilaiya and Maithon) and proposed (Balpahari) has been considered in the study. It has been attempted to simulate the system if there is no hydropower requirement from Tilaiya reservoir and navigational requirement from Panchet and Maithon reservoirs with and without proposed Balpahari reservoir. Altogether seven set of studies has been done. Simulation is one of the widely used technique for evaluation of performance of the system because of its mathematical simplicity and versatility. With advent of the high speed computer, computation time has drastically reduced. A simulation computer program for multipurpose, multireservoir system has been used for the study. The program has been run on main frame system (TATA ELXI) at computer centre of University of Roorkee, Roorkee.
