Water being the most common and basic substance found in the nature, is an essential element for all living organisms. Rapid industrilisation with scant consideration of waste disposal and explosive population growth coupled with increased demand, has resulted in worsening of water quality. The water after use is generally disposed easily in the rivers or aquifers, thus polluting the river or ground water especially in the vicinity of big cities with high industrial activities. The problem of water quality degradation of rivers and lakes has been paid more attention for a long time. But of late, the attention has also been focussed on pollution of ground water considering its significance with respect to various kinds of its uses. Whereas the problem of achieving acceptable quality of surface water focusses mainly on decreasing the known emissions of pollutants of these systems, the main problem involved in the protection of ground water resources, is to identify the areas and mechanisms by which pollutants can enter ground water flow systems.en_US
