Abstract: With about thirty percent of our cultivated area under irrigation and with very definite limits to additional areas which.can be brought under irrigation, it is clear that the most important critical input to Indian agriculture today is water . It is accordingly a matter of highest importance that all available supplies of water should be used to the best possible advantage. System analyses techniques are the standard tools available to the water resources planners and designers to analyse alternate management strategies and to choose the best possible solution for water resources planning problems within a reasonable time schedule. Computer models and Data management systems, provide the means to test the impact of various water resources policies / rules with sufficient accuracy before they are actually applied to the specified systems. Government of Orissa has planned to go for different river basin planning in coming years for efficient management and use of the water potential available in the state.- As a part of the above programme, this study is carried out for Ong basin, a part of Mahanadi. basin. Ong basin, being the major water potential source for the drought prone areas in the district of Kalahandi, Solangir and Sambalpur in the state, its systematic study is attempted here with the available data.
