A mathematical model has been developed for simulating two dimensional (r-z plane), unsteady state, axis-symmetric, radial flow in an confined aquifer towards a partially penetrating gravel packed well. It permits, among others, estimation of temporally and spatially distributed drawdowns in response to a constant or time variant discharge. The model is based upon numerical solution of the governing differential equation/water balance. The numerical solution is obtained by the finite difference technique employing Iterative Alternating -Direction Implicit Explicit Scheme (IADIE). Unlike the prevalent analytical as well as numerical solutions, the proposed solution does not presume a continuous screen and uniform radial velocity distribution across the screen. The model was used after proper adaptation to simulate the steady state piezometric heads and ultimately to analyse the effect of gravel pack on drawdown at well face. Typical values of hydraulic conductivities both for gravel and aquifer materials were assigned, with gravel thickness around the well. It is observed that a partially penetrating well with gravel pack provided throughout the aquifer thickness behaves hydraulically almost like a fully penetrating well of radius equal to bore hole radius. Thus, the gravel pack of sufficiently high thickness and GPR can lead to a substantial saving in the cost of well assembly (smaller radius, smaller screen length) without a significant..en_US
