Abstract: Orissa is a state sufficiently enriched with water resources in a number of river Basin Systems. The main river basins constituting the major part of the water resources are Mahanadi, Subarnarekha, Brahmani, Baitarani, Budhabalanga and Rushikulya basins. Hence the exploitation of water resources is of vital importance as far as Irrigation, hydropower, water supply and flood control are concerned. Hence the efficient water resources management is a bare necessity for optimum use of the water resources. Water availability study, which forms an important component of overall hydrologic study of a project, is required to be carried out to examine the feasibility and future planning of the project. In the present study the water availability study is carried out for Deo Irrigation Project contemplated to be constructed across river Deo in the Baitarani river basin of Orissa at Hatibari site covering an area of 292 km2 The project is located near village Hatibari in Karanjia block of Mayurbhanj district of. Northern Orissa. The project has been planned basically for irrigation purpose and for the integrated development of Baitarani basin.
